New Starts

I started again. "What have you started?" you may ask. My reply?

Fund raising. Robin and I had our second yard sale to raise money for our walk in October.
Cleaning. Having held said yard sale, a great deal has been moved out of my house. This has helped somewhat with the cleaning process.
Applying to School. I've completed and submitted my application for graduate school in Marriage and Family Therapy.
Shopping. School starts August 10 for my children. Enough said.
Dreaming. Well, okay, I never stopped doing this one. Just thought I'd throw it in for fun.

Happy

I'm happy. Busy, but happy.

I'll start training again for the Avon Breast Cancer Walk (New York) pretty soon. It's an October walk, so I still have a little longer before the "gotta get going" kicks in. I'm excited about this adventure, although I'll be starting graduate school (hopefully) in the fall,so the "to do" list will be a little longer. I'm just looking at the training walks as good LONG stress release sessions. Also, my babies will both be starting new schools in the fall. Although they are both comfortable with this transition, I'm a bundle of nerves. Again, 20 mile training walks may be helpful in this area. (Laugh to yourself, please.)

So, there you go. I'm running around like a chicken with her head cut off, forgetting if I'm coming or going, and I'm happier than I've been in a very long time.

Happiness is excitement that has found a settling down place. But there is always a little corner that keeps flapping around.

Updates

Well, Blogger was down for a day or so. I didn't realize how much I liked this little blog until I wasn't able to get to it. As we say in the counseling world--insight.

So, let me just update all on a few developments. First, I'm finally having my fence repaired. Whoohoo! My puppies will be able to be off the runners again. This is good. They aren't used to being chained up.

Second, Robin and I decided to move our walk to New York in October. This will give both of us time to volunteer here in Tuscaloosa and, later, fund raise.

Third, I decided to stay in town for the weekend instead of heading to the beach. Not that I didn't want to go and spend time with Hannah. I just figured I needed to deal with dogs, cats, hamster, turtle, fence, and, if I had time, house. Oh! And I need some clothes for the cruise, so I decided I could, maybe, do some shopping.

Wow! My stay-cationis starting to look more like a workaction!

Postponing a Goal

After discussing the recent tragedy in our area, and how our hearts are currently leading us to help with the rebuilding efforts of our community, Robin and I have decided to postpone our walk until later in the year.

We will now be walking in Santa Barbra, Charlotte or New York in October 2011. I will update this information as soon as we make up our minds.

Just to Let You Know...

Just to let you know:

1) Walking 20 miles takes some time to do.
2) Trying to walk 20 miles in almost 90 degree weather is nothing short of insanity.
3) Deciding to walk on a treadmill in a gym for 3 hours until the gym closes is less insane.
4) When walking 20 miles, you must remember that you will be sore the next day.
5) When you are up to mile 12, you will be sore RIGHT THEN.
6) It's always better to suffer with someone than by yourself.
7) If you eat an ice cream sandwich before walking 20 miles, it become a guilt-free pleasure.
8) You will more than likely sleep late the day after walking 20 miles.
9) Being able to justify NOT walking 10 miles the day after walking 20 miles is VERY easy to do.
10) No matter how much you will dread doing it, a little part of you will be very proud once you've accomplished the 20 mile walk.

Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time.

Whoops!

Well, it wasn't the best of training months in March. Between a grandmother in a hospital (Robin) and sinus infections and spring break trips (me), that whole walking thing was pushed to the back burner many days.

Robin was able (Let me just say right here--I'm not really sure HOW she managed this with her grandmother in the hospital with a shattered leg.) 45.6 miles. I managed 66 miles, which I can only attribute to a miracle, because I sure as heck didn't feel like walking a majority of the month.

But, upon discussing this (through texts) with Robin, we are determined to make April a better month of walking!

Success!

Well, today's yard sale did absolutely nothing for my healthy eating habits (Krispy Kreme donuts, brownies and coffee are some SERIOUS temptations!), nor my sleep habits (Late to bed and early to rise makes Christie cranky, achy, and no prize.); but the yard sale today was a success!

Robin and I raised around $100 apiece towards our fundraising goals. Now we are plotting our next yard sale the first weekend in May.  Maybe we will be able to earn even more!

Luckily these lovely ladies bought the two pillows I was seriously thinking of buying myself!

Facebook Plea for Donations

The begging has begun:

My Goal

Well, I've gone and done it again. I've decided to set myself a goal, and I just had to make it "challenging."

My friend Robin and I will be walking in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in May. The first day we will walk a marathon, the second, a half marathon. We have been training for several weeks now, which has been a huge commitment at times. (It's amazing how long it takes to walk distances of 16 to 24 miles.) And, sometimes, it's been hard. (Blisters and aching muscles make for a poor night's sleep.) But, the commitment to train for this walk is nothing compared to the commitment of the family and friends who stand behind a breast cancer victim. And the aches and pains we have worked through are nothing compared to the pain a breast cancer patient must face daily.

I'll be walking in memory of Robin's aunt, Angela Sullivan Junkin, who lost her fight with cancer on August 26, 2008. I'm also walking in honor of Alex Lawson. Alex is the son of my friend, Kristy, and he has been engaging in his own fight to begin walking. (You can find more information about both of these amazing people on my blog at christiegranec.blogspot.com.)

Please join Robin and I in fighting this terrible disease by donating today. Your donation will provide funding in five key areas for those who need it most: medical research, access to treatment, screening and diagnosis, support services and education and awareness.

You can donate easily at avonwalk.org. Or, if you feel more comfortable donating by check, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you all in advance!

Fundraising 101

When you have school-aged children, you somehow become a full-time fundraiser. Boosterthon, Hoops for Hearts, cookie dough sales, wrapping paper sales, Krispy Kreme donuts...you get the picture.

So, to be perfectly honest, I feel I am highly qualified to raise money for the Avon Walk. Granted, the $1800.00 goal is a bit daunting. Okay, a lot daunting. But I really feel like it's doable.

Having said that, Robin and I brainstormed this great idea. We will have a HUGE yard sale the first weekend of April. HUGE. MAJOR. GARGANTUAN. And we will be trying to raise the total amount of $3600.00 for the two of us.

So, if you are interested in donating any items for the yard sale, please just let me know. If you'd like to donate money to the Avon Walk, I will be posting that information soon on the blog. And, if you'd like to come buy some of the wonderful items we will be having, we'd love to see you!

Fundraising requires both optimism and realism. Without the first, few if any gift solicitation efforts would be made. Without the second, few if any would succeed.

Whoo Hoo!

I believe this month would be considered an overall success in the training department.

Robin added up her monthly walking total: 57 miles!
My total: 68 miles!

Now, I'm hoping both of our totals will be higher next month, but, I'm not going to jinx us and say they will be.  After both of us suffered through various forms of ick, spent time caring for others with the ick, and traveling an unreal number of miles during the month (me for wedding celebrations, Robin with crazy work schedule), I will not predict anything going smoothly in March.

In other success news, Robin is now officially signed up for the Avon Walk. She has her T-shirt and everything! Now we just need to book flights and a hotel room, and we are good to go!

Bad Girl! Bad Girl! Whatcha Gonna Do?

NOT my 4 mile walk.

Instead, I took my son to an appointment that lasted until almost 7 p.m. Then I came home to bake baby shower cakes. I'll begin the decorating of said cakes tomorrow night.

Maybe on Thursday I'll be a good girl, but, I have to say, being bad felt pretty good tonight!

Doubting Dad

Today Robin and I walked our 6 miles like to dedicated (most of the time) individuals that we are. We were able to walk outside again due to the absolute gorgeous weather we were blessed with for a second day in a row.

Riding home with my sense of accomplishment, I thought little more about our walk. That is, until I received a text from Robin.  In a nutshell, Robin asked me to quote how many miles we had walked over the weekend, as her dad did not believe that she was walking regularly.

Now, please let me explain that, from all accounts, Robin's dad has a strong sense of humor. His humor often takes on the form of antagonistic teasing. So, I'm going to assume that this was the reason for "proof of walk" from me.

I would like to also, at this time, extend an invitation to Robin's dad to join us next weekend in our walks. I'd be willing to bet that he wouldn't request proof a second time!

My Big Mistake

I made a few mistakes today. None of the life-threatening variety, but mistakes none-the-less.

First, I forgot to cut my toenails prior to my walk today. Now, this may sound like a trivial detail; but, please trust me, if you are planning to walk or run any distance at all, make sure you have short toenails.

Second, I had planned a walking route for today using a program by Google. I was able to determine exactly where we needed to walk to reach 14 miles--the goal for today. It was a fantastic plan, but, if you fail to print out or at least review your route prior to going for your walk, it's pretty much worthless. As such, going by memory, Robin and I were able to complete 12.6 miles instead of the 14 which we had planned.

Finally, I made my biggest mistake for the day. I came home, grabbed a snack and a hot shower, and then--and this is the mistake--put on my warm and fuzzy PJ's. Not a problem if I was ready to snuggle down into my bed. That wasn't the original plan for the night, though. Time for some coffee!

Mission Accomplished

Robin and I were both very good girls tonight. We each walked (separately due to my having my babies) 4 miles. Well, 4 miles for me, 4.3 miles for Robin. She lost track of walking. I did not have that problem!

Robin ended up burning 454 calories, and I came in at 408 burned.

Mission accomplished.

Walking to Nowhere

I did well this week. I walked 24 miles over four days this week, including 10 miles yesterday and 6 today.  Overall, I burned over 1500 calories yesterday and today.

Robin also trained this week, with her walking 8 miles yesterday with 596 + calories burned. (Robin's numbers are little skewed, because she participated in a 5K in the Birmingham area on Saturday, so we have no calorie totals for that time. Also, the gym closed on her, so she was shorted 2 miles.)

I'm really looking forward to the weather warming up a bit in order to train outside some. I don't care how many marathons are being shown on USA, at some point, walking in place gets a bit monotonous. I'm looking forward to walking somewhere other than nowhere.

Drumroll Please!!!!

Ladies and Gentleman,

I am pleased to announce that I have walked 69 miles for the month of January.

Now this means that I missed 17 miles. I definitely need to work on getting my walks in during the weeks that I have the kids. Also, I missed one mile last night. Since this was due to the gym closing, I feel it was a sign from God giving me permission to end a mile early and go get a hot fudge sundae. The fact that the Sonic's ice cream machine was broken did not deter my belief in this fact one little bit! (It just postponed my hot fudge sundae consumption for a day.)

On to February and all the blisters, sore muscles and long talks with Robin!

"In the fast paced world in which we live, the exercise of walking provides a way to actually slow down, to talk with a friend or family member, or to just be alone without noise. For many, it just seems to be the right activity at the right moment in time."

Training Schedule

I was asked today (due to my numerous Facebook posts regarding my long days of walking) what I was training for.  I was also asked what the training schedule was.

So, here's the link to the training schedule Robin and I are following. We would love people to join us! Especially on the 12 mile days!

You have to stay in shape. My grandmother, she started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She's 97 today and we don't know where the hell she is.

And Now I'm Tired

I am incredibly proud of myself. I completed one week of training in full, although it kicked my butt today!

Tuesday I walked four miles, as well as Thursday. On Saturday, Robin came over and we walked my neighborhood together. I have to say, that was a heck of a lot more fun than walking by myself!

And then, there was today. Eight miles. Over two hours of constant walking. UGH!!! I admit, I was fading by the six mile mark. Luckily, my baby girl came in and brought me a piece of brownie pizza. Since I burned 884 calories, I feel that a little brownie pizza was perfectly acceptable. (I'm so good at this rationalizing!)

Now, I'm going to attempt to remain warm during the winter weather storm that we are having right now. My car is safely parked in the garage where it will remain until I get the all clear, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for no power outages. There's a National Championship to watch tomorrow night after all!

4 Miles Down, a LOT to Go

Walked 4 miles today. Burned a lot of calories. Whoohoo!

My next walk day is Thursday (another 4 miles), swiftly followed by Saturday (4 miles) and then Sunday (8 miles.) Now, if I stick with my quest to up to 65 miles, I will need to add an extra mile somewhere. That will probably be Saturday, but we'll see.

Strive for 65!

Looking at the training program for the Avon Breast Cancer walk, I realized that I will be walking a total of 62 miles the first three weeks of the training. Now, don't ask me why it bothers me that this number is rounded up or down, but it does. I would rather walk 60 miles or 65 miles. So, on the theory that more is better as far as exercise goes, I will be adding three extra miles during the first three weeks. At least I will try!

And, since I couldn't find any quotes I really liked having to do with walking for 65 miles, I'm just going to add some quotes I love from the Great Philosopher. The just seemed appropriate today.

If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day, so I never have to live without you.

Pooh nodded. "I promise," he said.
